UKMTO: Tanker struck by unknown projectile in Strait of Hormuz

A tanker was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire that was later extinguished, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Thursday.

“Local authorities have reported a tanker has been hit by an unknown projectile, causing fire to the vessel which has since been extinguished,” UKMTO said in an advisory.

All crew members aboard the tanker were reported safe and accounted for, while no environmental impact had been reported, the maritime agency said.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

UKMTO advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution while transiting the Strait of Hormuz and to report any suspicious activity.

The incident comes as heightened security concerns continue to affect shipping through the strategically important waterway, a major route for global oil and gas supplies.
