Parliament approves number of recommendations related to Ministry of Water, Environment

The Parliament approved, in its session on Sunday, headed by Deputy Speaker Abdulrahman al-Jamaei, a number of recommendations contained in the report of the joint committee of the committees of trade and industry, public health and population, water and environment, development, oil and mineral wealth, Services and Finance.

The report included the issues included in the council’s minutes of its session held on Shawwal 20, 1443, corresponding to May 21, 2022, in relation to the recommendations of the Water and Environment Committee.

The Parliament, after extensive discussion and the commitment of the government side, represented by the Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Abdulraqib al-Shurmani, approved to implement the recommendations of the Ministry of Water and its affiliates, as follows:

1- The government should move towards the use of alternative and renewable energy, which contributes to dispensing with the high-cost oil derivatives and the scarcity of their availability in the local market as a result of the aggression and the blockade.

2- The government shall provide the necessary quantities of diesel to operate the pumps of water wells in the capital Sana’a and the provinces of the Republic to ensure that citizens have access to water in sufficient quantities.

3- Working to determine the price of selling drinking water to citizens from private wells so that the condition of citizens is taken into account and a reasonable profit margin is achieved for investors and property owners.

4- The Ministry of Finance shall schedule and deduct the indebtedness owed by government agencies to water and sanitation institutions from the approved budgets of those entities.

5- Reducing the random drilling of water wells and not granting drilling licenses for wells except according to the legal procedures specified by the water law and its executive regulations.

6 – Expanding the construction of water barriers and rainwater traps in areas suitabe in accordance with approved studies and specifications, in a way that contributes to the recharge of groundwater wells.

7- The Ministries of Water, Environment and Local Administration shall list all stalled and suspended water projects in all districts of the provinces of Yemen, develop the necessary treatments according to the nature of each project, and provide the Council with a detailed report on the results of the inventory and the proposed treatments within a period of three months from its date.
