An official report revealed the arrival of more than 250,000 migrants from the Horn of Africa to Yemen between 2018-2019.

Yemen has received, since its signing of the 1951 Refugee Convention, hundreds of thousands of immigrants from countries in the Horn of Africa, whose number in recent years has reached about 250,000 immigrants from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.

It pointed out that the main driver of these arriving human waves of refugees are international smuggling gangs, from which networks that include members of different nationalities branch out, in addition to the role played by the coalition of aggression by facilitating their entry and crossing to the coasts of the southern and eastern governorates and facilitating their flow to the northern regions.

The report attributed the reasons for the migration of Africans to the deteriorating economic conditions and civil wars in their countries, and to move freely within the Yemeni lands.

It indicated that one of the most important factors that encourage Africans to come to Yemeni lands is the geographical location of the country and its proximity to the African coasts, and the presence of smuggling gangs that exploit their difficult humanitarian situation.

The report recommended the need to address the issues of asylum and migration from the Horn of Africa to Yemen, the concerted efforts of the competent authorities, and the unification of visions and concepts about this phenomenon and its effects on Yemeni society in various aspects.
