The Speaker of the Yemeni House of Representatives in Sana’a, Yahya Ali Al-Ra’i, expressed Yemen’s condemnation and the Parliament’s rejection of the recent UN Security Council statement regarding the situation in Yemen, according to the official “Saba” News Agency.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the current President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont, Al-Ra’i characterized the statement as a clear bias toward the Saudi-led coalition and a distortion of international standards, stating that it disregards the right of self-defense against ongoing airstrikes.
Al-Ra’i stated that the targeting of civilian infrastructure and economic facilities since March 2015 has resulted in more than 60,000 civilian casualties, mostly women, children, and the elderly.
The letter held the Saudi regime fully responsible for reneging on its declared commitments regarding de-escalation and the implementation of the agreed-upon roadmap, citing a move toward military escalation. It highlighted recent incidents, including strikes affecting Sanaa International Airport, the Central Prison facility in Jawf Governorate, as well as ongoing airstrikes on roads, bridges, and public service facilities.
The Yemeni House Speaker called on UN and international bodies to fulfill their moral and legal responsibilities regarding the Yemeni people’s rights to sovereignty and independence, warning of the consequences of military escalation and holding the opposing side responsible for the impacts of the military actions and blockade.
The letter was accompanied by a summary detailing the catastrophic impact of crimes committed by Saudi Arabi against Yemen’s infrastructure and population.
