Malian Defense Minister killed in attack on Kati Military Base Outside Bamako

Mali’s Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in an armed attack on his residence at the Kati military base outside the capital, Bamako, yesterday.

Radio France Internationale and two relatives of the minister said on Sunday, as reported by Reuters, that the operation in Kati—located about 15 kilometers north of Bamako—was part of a broader assault carried out by armed groups. Analysts and diplomats described it as one of the largest coordinated attacks in the country in years.

The Malian army had announced on Saturday that the situation was under control following attacks launched by armed groups in the capital, Bamako, and other cities across the country.
