The United Nations Development Program estimated that 377,000 people had been killed by the end of this year, directly and indirectly, as a result of the seven-year war in Yemen.
A recent report of the program on the impact of war and conflict in Yemen said “By the end of 2021, the conflict in Yemen will have resulted in 377,000 deaths, nearly 60 percent of which (about 226,200) are indirect. In contrast, the number of war dead Direct 150,800 thousand people, up to forty percent.
He added that the indirect deaths are a result of “conflict-related problems such as lack of access to food, water and health care, while they largely affect young children who are vulnerable to malnutrition as a Yemeni child under the age of five dies every nine minutes due to the conflict this year.
“Achieving peace by January 2022, along with a comprehensive recovery process, may enable Yemenis to reverse the increase in poverty in the country and return to the middle income level in 2050, and end the extreme poverty that now affects 15.6 million people” the report said.
He believes that malnutrition “could be cut in half by 2025, and the country could achieve $450 billion in economic growth by 2050 under an integrated peace and recovery scenario.”
