PM: Strengthening ICRC’s Role Regarding War Prisoners, Humanitarian Needs Is Important

Prime Minister Dr. Abdulaziz Saleh bin Habtoor met on Monday with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, and his accompanying delegation, who is currently visiting Yemen.

The Prime Minister stressed the depth of cooperation relations between Yemen and the ICRC, which increased significantly during the period of the six and a half years of US-Saudi aggression and siege.

Bin Habtoor reviewed the current humanitarian situation, the great challenges faced by citizens and the humanitarian needs, which are witnessing an increase, especially with regard to health, water and environment sectors.

During the meeting, they discussed the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross, its humanitarian interventions, and its priorities for the coming period, in line with the existing priorities at the governmental and societal levels, especially in public health and water sectors.

They stressed the importance of focusing on joint work to address any imbalances during the implementation of the  ICRC’s projects to achieve optimal use of them in the service of the Yemeni people.

They also affirmed the strengthening of ICRC’s pivotal role regarding war prisoners in light of repeated initiatives of the National Party seeking to address this issue in a comprehensive manner, in addition to cooperation relations between ICRC and the Yemeni Red Crescent.

The ICRC president expressed his happiness at visiting Yemen and his hope that peace will come to its territory, as it represents an essential factor on the road to ending the great suffering of Yemenis.

He pointed at the importance of joint activity between the Salvation Government and the  ICRC’s office during this critical period and the need to address challenges and set priorities for work.

Peter Maurer pointed to the extent of the suffering of the citizens that he witnessed during the visit and its repercussions on all aspects of life, especially the living and health needs.

He stressed the Yemeni people’s need for a lot of support in light of the current situation, pointing to the  ICRC’s keenness to consolidate its humanitarian role with regard to prisoners.
