US President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the US Presidential race, US media reported on Sunday.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a statement .
Biden’s withdrawal comes after strong pressure from members of his party urging him not to run for a second term, following several setbacks since he faced off against his Republican rival, Donald Trump.
The Democratic Party will now need to select another candidate with the limited time remaining in the race, as speculation that Vice President Kamala Harris may be at the top of the list of potential candidates.
