Power cuts worsen in occupied areas of Marib amid searing heat

Power outages are worsening across occupied areas of Marib province as extreme summer temperatures continue to rise.

Local residents and eyewitnesses reported that power outages have reached unprecedented levels, exceeding 12 consecutive hours in some areas, while service is restored only for limited periods.

The prolonged blackouts have compounded the hardships facing both residents and internally displaced people amid the summer heat.

Sources said the power outages have contributed to a rise in heat-related illnesses, including skin and respiratory diseases as well as fever cases, particularly among children and the elderly, who are unable to access adequate cooling.

The worsening power crisis has fueled growing public anger, with residents accusing local authorities of failing to address persistent shortcomings in basic services, particularly electricity. The criticism comes as repeated summer outages continue to disrupt daily life across the province.

Many residents say the absence of sustainable solutions has allowed the chronic electricity shortages to persist, leaving communities increasingly vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.

The Safer Gas Power Plant, which once generated electricity for large parts of Yemen, is now struggling to meet demand even in Marib city and the surrounding districts due to neglect and corruption.
