At least 16 soldiers were killed and 23 others wounded in an armed attack targeting a military detachment in the Téra region of western Niger, near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso.
Niger’s state news agency reported on Sunday that the attack took place on Friday. It also said 15 attackers were killed, while nine soldiers sustained serious injuries, according to AFP.
The agency added that search operations, pursuit of the attackers, and efforts to secure the area are still ongoing.
Niger has faced repeated attacks by armed groups for more than a decade, while the military junta that seized power in July 2023 continues to struggle with containing the violence.
