Canadian PM: Canada to impose tariffs on U.S. imports

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday that Canada will impose tariffs on U.S. imports across several sectors starting September 8, in response to new 50 percent U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Carney said the measures would match Washington’s tariffs “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.

The tariffs will target U.S. steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The move follows the failure of Canada and the United States to reach a trade agreement after days of negotiations, further straining relations between the two longtime allies.

Trump’s tariffs cover Canadian exports worth about $20 billion and offer no exemption under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
