Yemen’s National Human Rights Commission condemned a Saudi airstrike that targeted Al-Rawd School in the Al-Rubai’i area of Al-Taiziyah district, Taiz province, on Monday, for the third time, completely destroying the remaining parts of the school building.
In a statement on Sunday, the commission said the repeated targeting of a school that had already been destroyed reflects a systematic assault on Yemen’s education sector and educational facilities amid continued attacks on the country’s infrastructure.
It said the renewed strike, despite the school having previously been bombed and destroyed, demonstrates continued attacks on civilian facilities, particularly schools that should be protected from military targeting.
The commission said more than 2,775 educational facilities across Yemen have been targeted over the past 12 years, causing extensive damage to the education sector and depriving thousands of students of access to schools.
It also noted an escalation in attacks on schools and telecommunications towers since September 3, describing them as part of continued attacks on civilian and service infrastructure.
The commission called on human rights and humanitarian organizations to document the attacks, work to protect educational and civilian facilities, and hold those responsible accountable. It warned that the continued destruction of schools is further worsening the damage to Yemen’s education system.
