FM congratulates Burmese counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hisham Sharaf has a cable of congratulations to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi.

In the cable sent on Sunday, Sharaf congratulated his counterpart and Myanmar’s government and people on the on the occasion of the country’s national day.

On 4 January 1948, the nation became an independent republic, under the terms of the Burma Independence Act 1947. The new country was named the Union of Burma, with Sao Shwe Thaik as its first president and U Nu as its first prime minister.

In 1989, the country’s official English name, which it had held since 1885, was changed from the Union of Burma to the Union of Myanmar.
