The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, represented by the General Administration of Plant Protection, in coordination with the security authorities, seized 16 tons and 350 kilograms of prohibited and smuggled pesticides at the Salif port in Hodeida governorate on board a locomotive.

The General Directorate of Plant Protection said in a statement received by Saba that the seized pesticides packed in 16,350 cartons with a capacity of ten kilograms per carton were coming across the sea, which are prohibited pesticides containing the banned methomyl and bearing misleading names.

Regarding the measures taken regarding this quantity of prohibited pesticides, the Plant Protection Department confirmed that after the process of seizing and seizing pesticides with the locomotive, legal procedures are currently being completed in preparation for their referral to the competent prosecution to take the necessary legal measures.

It pointed out that the plan of the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by the General Directorate of Plant Protection, includes coordination with the security services to strengthen control over the circulation of pesticides and combat the smuggling of prohibited substances that pose a real danger to environmental and health life.

It considered the entry of such a quantity of pesticides a disaster by all standards due to its risks, damages and effects on the air, soil, plants and living organisms, including humans, as well as the environment and public health.

The General Directorate of Plant Protection called on pesticide and agricultural materials traders to abide by the controls and procedures and not to smuggle such toxic substances in a way that does not make them vulnerable to legal issue.
