A medical team at Dhamar Maternity and Childhood Hospital in Dhamar Governorate successfully performed a cesarean section on a woman who gave birth to conjoined twins, conjoined at the head and body.
Ms. Mariam Al-Sanabani, Director of Dhamar Maternity and Childhood Hospital in the governorate, explained in a statement to Al-Thawra that the condition of the 30-year-old mother from the Anas district is stable.
She noted that the twins are in critical condition and their survival rates vary. However, the girls are conjoined at the chest and abdomen and are independent in several vital organs. Each has a head and reproductive system, and the girls also have two legs and four hands.
She noted that they share a diaphragm and have one heart.
She praised the efforts of the Minister of Health and Environment, Dr. Ali Abdul Karim Shaiban, and Dr. Tariq Al-Khaiwani, Director of Health and Environment in Dhamar, in supporting the hospital to improve service provision.
She also praised the efforts of the medical team, consisting of Dr. Suad Al-Jabri, an obstetrician and gynecologist; Dr. Bassam Al-Handhi, a pediatrician and neonatologist; nurse Hashem Al-Gharbani, the hospital’s nursery manager; attendant Mohammed Abdullah Al-Mawshiki; anesthesiologist Abdulmalik Akrout; and nursery staff Mujib Mansour. We should not forget the role of Dr. Faisal Al-Babli in facilitating the procedures for the twins in Sana’a.
She stated that this case is considered a very rare and complex one, confirming that the two girls were transferred to Al-Jumhuri Hospital in Sana’a to complete the necessary surgical procedures.
The director of Dhamar Maternity and Childhood Hospital confirmed that the hospital needs an emergency vehicle to transport critical and emergency cases.
