Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, warned on Monday that Washington “is still fundamentally seeking to control the island,” located in the Arctic and belonging to Denmark, despite US President Donald Trump’s recent ruling out the use of military force.
“The American position towards Greenland and its people has not changed,” Nielsen told parliament, according to Al-Mayadeen Net. “The goal is for Greenland to be linked to the United States and governed from there.”
He added that the United States continues to search for “ways to possess and control Greenland.”
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to seize Greenland, citing concerns for his country’s national security in the face of Russia and China. However, last week he backed down from his threats to impose tariffs and ruled out seizing the island by force.
Trump said he had secured “full US access” to Greenland in an agreement with NATO, although details were unclear.
