Khalil al-Hayya elected head of Hamas’s political bureau

The Hamas Movement has announced the election of Khalil al‑Hayya as head of its political bureau, succeeding martyr Yehya as-Sinwar, the Palestinian Information Center reported.

The announcement came in a brief statement on Monday following the completion of elections within the Movement’s General Shura Council.

In May, Hamas had said a second round of internal elections would be held to choose its new leader.

At the time, Hamas said that an initial electoral round for a new leader ended without a decisive result, requiring a second round in accordance with internal regulations. However, it did not disclose the names of the candidates running for the post.

Following the martyrdom of Yehya as-Sinwar during clashes with Israeli forces in Rafah, Hamas announced that a temporary leadership council would steer the Movement until elections were held for a new political bureau chief.
