A Palestinian baby girl died Tuesday morning in Gaza City due to the extreme cold, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported, citing medical sources.
According to the medical sources, the infant, seven-month-old Shatha Abu Jarad from Gaza City’s al-Daraj neighborhood, died after her heart suddenly stopped as a result of extreme cold.
With the death of Abu Jarad, the number of children who have died in the Gaza Strip due to the extreme cold since the beginning of winter has risen to nine, amid a shortage of aid and a lack of heating.
The same sources indicated that the incident reflects the severity of the humanitarian situation in the Strip, especially for children and displaced people living in flimsy tents ill-equipped to withstand the cold weather.
Residents of the Gaza Strip are suffering from a lack of shelter and medical care, and a lack of heating due to fuel shortages, amidst a stormy, cold, and rainy weather system.
