Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on current European leaders to open talks with Russia.
Speaking at a WDR forum about the Minsk negotiations, she said past leaders had the authority to negotiate directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Merkel stressed that today’s leaders should take responsibility and play a key role in diplomacy.
Putin, meanwhile, said he preferred former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a potential mediator, adding that Europe—not Russia—had refused negotiations.
